Palace of Justice

The front section of Palace of Justice (Veleslavinova Street nos. 21, 22) is the court building, the rear used to be a prison, now the state archives are kept here.

Both buildings were erected 1899-1902 in Eclectic style on the site of the former Dominican monastery, abolished by Joseph II in 1783. Here there used to be the lofty Gothic Church of St. Margaret, the Chapel of the Holy Ghost which stood across Dominikanska Street; later there was a hospital with the Chapel of St. Wenceslas and an imposing Gothic-Baroque convent, next to which was also a cemetery.

After abolition of the monastery there was a military hospital in the building. With the destruction of the monastery complex (1895), Plzen lost an extremely valuable treasure.

The convent was rebuilt in the early 18th century by Jakub Auguston.
